Nikki Fox asked:

Arachnophobia is the scientific name for the fear of spiders. Is is the most common example of an animal phobia in the world and although to many people it is just a mild annoyance, to some it has very intense effects. Different people suffer to different degrees and to those who do not suffer them phobias seem irrational, the afflicted person reacts intensely to the merest sign of the animal causing the phobia. It is often difficult if not impossible for those of us not suffering to make any sense of what they are experiencing. Phobias can be stimulated by many animals but spiders are the most common source. Phobias do not infer a cowardly or otherwise weak mind, Bowers of the Antarctic, an intrepid explorer of the most inhospitable places on earth was apparently terrified of spiders. People who suffer badly can not even enter a room without having someone else check it for spiders first.

Fear of spiders has a long history, around the time of Christ’s birth parts of Abyssinia were abandoned by the whole population as a result of a ‘plague of spiders’. Amongst primitive people fear of spiders occurs irregularly, while many African people exhibit a general far of large spiders most Amazonian Indians don’t. In fact the Piaroa Indians actually eat the larger spiders and consider them a delicacy.

They are not the only ones to do so, throughout European history there are scattered records of individual people who loved, and thus ate, and even delighted in eating spiders. The French author Reaumur reports a certain young lady who ate all the spiders she could find. There is also written records suggesting that one Maria Schurrman was very fond of them, claiming her birth in the sun sign of Scorpio as justification for her habit. In addition to this the astronomer Lalande is also known to have enjoyed them. However it is mostly women who are recorded as having such epicurean tastes and W. S. Bristowe, author of The World of Spiders reports that although he had already tried eating cooked tarantulas he was surprised by a lady called Miss Jennifer Walker who assured him common British spiders were delicious eaten raw. She ate one after he had turned down the suggestion and he then followed suit. His report continues to tell us that during the after noon they sampled 5 different species.

Arachnophobia and the irrational fears seem to propagate from an early age and it is widely thought that young people are more likely to accept spiders as just another fascinating animal if given the chance. Part of the source of arachnophobia is a result of our adult alienation from the beauty of the world, and it is a fact that most serious sufferers are middle aged and older. It is also a fact that 9 out of ten recorded sufferers are female. This of course may well reflect our social gender expectations in that men find it much harder to admit to being frightened of anything.

Paul Hillyard reports that when 18,000 children were questioned in the 1950s about the animal they liked least the spider came second with 10% of the vote (snakes won). In 1988 the Spider was still second but now the Rat had slipped into first place. In the USA in the 1980s the Cockroach was a clear winner and spiders were way down the list. Theodore Savory analysed the reasons why female school students in England disliked spiders and the 3 most important reasons were:

1) spider size

2) the black colouration

3)the length of the spiders’ legs.

In the UK nearly 50% of woman and 10% of men admitted to some degree of arachnophobia when questioned. About 3% of people claimed an extreme fear, and the most people claimed some apprehension. Scientists agree that there are 3 components to a phobia:

1) the experience of fear

2) physiological responses (sweating, heart-rate etc.)

3) motor responses (immobilisation or flight)

However they is very little agreement as to where the phobias come from. Many people seem to inherit at least a predisposition to arachnophobia and that otherwise it can be conditioned into people, but otherwise there are a large number of unproven theories as to the causes. The most accepted form of treatment is aversion or behaviour treatment. These tend to involve a mixture of education and experience, most arachnophobes (in fact most people) have little real knowledge of spiders. Learning allows the sufferer to use their own mind to counteract the rising emotions. Familiarisation or experience has a similar effect, giving people the opportunity to gain perceptual evidence of spiders as being basically harmless, to desensitise them. Although the details of all treatments depend on the therapist as well as on the age and experience of the sufferer a large degree of moral support is essential.

Jacob Saxbury asked:

Hollywood made a beautiful bad film about it – “Arachnophobia,” but for some, the show was excruciating – if they even went to see it. The cast sure was amazing: John Goodman (“Roseanne”), Kathy Kinney (“The Drew Carey Show”), and Jeff Daniels (“Dumb and Dumber”).

Nevertheless it doesn’t take a film to frighten people who undergo from arachnophobia. Spiders can be anywhere and everywhere. That fact isolated strikes terror into the hearts of those who view this horror in their minds.

This writer has never really had a glitch with spiders. When I see them, I find the close shoe and mail them onto spider heaven. I don’t want them crawling all over me, but if I see one, I don’t get freaked out. Now show me a snake and it’s a different anecdote. So I understand!

God did not make spiders cute and cuddly. He did not make them fun or even interesting – well, to most people. After all, they just kind of crawl around, and lurk in shadows spaces occasionally rotating a web for you to get all over your face if you toddle through it. Around Halloween, this can be great – handmade decorations! Nevertheless at other epoch, it’s just a nuisance.

Then you have to think those spiders that are lethal. Media outlets have made all of us increasingly aware of the dangers of bronzed recluse spiders and the mean scratch they can inflict on the soul body. Then you have to believe the deadly Tarantulas, and other wicked spiders that can be lurking just underneath your house.

Perhaps this is why people are terrified of spiders – because they can be everywhere. Arachnophobia is a very honestly phobia for many people. Almost half of all women undergo from an alarm of spiders and about 10 percent of men portion that alarm.

Fear of spiders, just like other phobias, is a very existent proviso for many people. It is one that they regularly fancy they could get over just for the sense of normalcy. Instead of shrieking in start at the prospect of a spider, they want they do like I do and just grab a shoe transport that spider into the great nameless. Nevertheless they’re not able to do that: at least not yet. There are customs to overcome the concern of spiders. Let’s take a good look at why people fear spiders, how phobias mature, and conduct to overcome that fear and manage a satisfying life right alongside those 8 legged creatures.

Jacob Saxbury asked:

As comical as it may sound to many people, Arachnophobia–the fright of spiders, is a traumatizing veracity for millions of Americans and people worldwide.

If you or somebody you know has this anxiety, then it should be brewing in your psyche to find the answers that earn candor from this evil web of concern.

Even while to the fixated it may seem impossible at first, the worry of spiders, like most fears, can most sure be overcome.

There are a category of treatments, exercises, and therapies that can help and the World Wide Web…oops…pitiful…offers a extensive array of capital and substance that can be of assistance.

Most phobias are established to have developed from a traumatizing childhood experience that grew with the anxious so that it eventually becomes a part of him. At time when traumatizing childhood experiences cannot be established, psychologists were known to venture into the realm of reincarnation and past life regression.

Phobia is not the same as “nightmare”. A “panic” is a awareness of impending chance or evil established by inherent logics and reasoning or by gut instinct. A “dread” on the other hand is an inflated and disproportionate perception of actuality.

Some researchers theorized that spiders were once a danger to the human line anywhere in evolutionary annals and that panic attacks resulting from phobias were a cover system that could save the life of personnel. Such theories, however, have no real foundations.

Is the horror of spiders rational? Almost everyone would accede that the answer to that grill is a resounding “no”. It is in verity, fairly “allure”. An arachnophobe would be dreadfully scared of a spider that is sincerely safe, and venomous spiders are not really a risk if seen.

Experts harmonize that shrewd more about your terror helps you overcome it since most phobias grow out of fright of the strange. Following are some “fun” truth about spiders.

The anxiety of spiders actually has its roots pressing in Greek mythology. “Arachnophobia” comes from the Greek words, “arachne”, value “spider”, and “phobos”, sense “a panic”. Arachne was a lovely Greek maiden. She willful weaving under Athena, and had extraordinary talent. When her skills were later recognized, she denied any education given by Athena. Athena turned herself into a bitter, old woman. She approached Arachne, and tricked her into a weaving contest. Arachne wove portraits of the gods performing evil deeds. Athena and Arachne polished their weaving in an extremely rapid quantity of time, but Arachne’s work was much finer than Athena’s. Athena was furious that a simple mortal had beaten her in a weaving contest and had portrayed the gods in a disrespectful way. Overcome with rage, she beat Arachne to the ground. Arachne was so grieve, she hanged herself. Athena realized what she had done, regretted her actions, and strewn a magic liquid against Arachne, whirling her into a spider, so she could keep her weaving skills.

The feared tarantula isn’t malicious. A tarantula’s tartness can be agonizing, but it isn’t any more unsafe than a bee hurt.

Under a spider’s abdomen, near the rear, are tiny stubs called spinnerets. The spider uses its legs to attract liquid silk made in its abdomen from the spinnerets. The silk hardens as it stretches. Since silk is made out of protein, a spider eats the worn silk of an old web before spiraling a new one.

On an American one-cash cost, there is an owl in the high left-hand trap of the “1″ sheathed in the “protect” and a spider secret in the front upper right-hand corner.

Most spiders belong to the orb weaver spider family, Family Aranidae. This is pronounced “A Rainy Day.”

In the 1960s, animal manners researchers studied the things of diverse substances on spiders. When spiders were fed flies that had been injected with caffeine, they spun very “anxious” webs. When spiders ate flies injected with LSD, they spun webs with riotous, abstract patterns. Spiders that were given sedatives destroy obsolete before completing their webs.

Horseshoe crabs and spiders are actually close relatives. The talisman crab belongs to the large group of invertebrates (animals lacking backbones) called Arthropods. This group also includes lobsters, crabs, insects, spiders, and scorpions. Even though it looks crab-like, with a hard skin and claws, the horseshoe crab is more strictly connected to scorpions and spiders than to crabs.

Many cultures trust that spiders take good chance. The spider was popular with the Romans, who had a darling mascot in the contour of a precious mineral upon which a spider was carved. Also they were fond of shipping little spiders of gold or silver, or any of the fortunate metals, to create good chance in something to do with trade.

Spider silk can stretch up to 50 percent of its creative segment. A element of spider silk the width of a pencil could prevent a Boeing 747 in voyage.

On average, people fear spiders more than they fear closing. However, statistically, you are more likely to be killed by a champagne cork than by the kick of a fatal spider.

We’d doubtless all be dead without spiders. Their sheer number makes spiders critical in maintaining the residue of quality. Because they shape insect communities anywhere they occur, spiders play a essential role in the terrestrial food series. Without all those hungry spiders, insect populations would explode, food crops would be decimated, and ecological balances ravaged. Humans would maybe starve within a problem of months–if they hadn’t already succumbed to various insect-borne diseases. No spider, incidentally, has been found to transmit disease.

Spider hatred can be worn to treat certain neurological and mental disorders. A study group in Utah has lonely components from the hatred of many species of North American spiders, which may help condense intellect hurt following strokes.

As droll as it may sound to many people, Arachnophobia–the anxiety of spiders, is a traumatizing certainty for millions of Americans and people worldwide.

If you or superstar you know has this terror, then it should be brewing in your care to find the answers that take openness from this evil web of worry.

Even though to the anxious it may appear impossible at first, the anxiety of spiders, like most fears, can most certainly be overcome.

Many cultures trust that spiders take good chance. The spider was admired with the Romans, who had a choice talisman in the mold of a precious deseed leading which a spider was stamped. Also they were fond of transport little spiders of gold or silver, or any of the fortunate metals, to convey good destiny in something to do with trade.

Spider silk can stretch up to 50 percent of its earliest piece. A feature of spider silk the width of a pencil could break a Boeing 747 in departure.

On ordinary, people fear spiders more than they fear ending. However, statistically, you are more expected to be killed by a champagne plug than by the prick of a lethal spider.

We’d possibly all be ended lacking spiders. Their sheer number makes spiders essential in maintaining the evaluate of scenery. Because they formation insect communities where they arise, spiders play a essential role in the terrestrial food chain. Without all those hungry spiders, insect populations would explode, food crops would be decimated, and ecological balances ravaged. Humans would perhaps starve within a count of months–if they hadn’t already succumbed to countless insect-borne diseases. No spider, incidentally, has been found to transmit disease.

Jacob Saxbury asked:

As humorous as it may sound to many people, Arachnophobia–the fright of spiders, is a traumatizing veracity for millions of Americans and people worldwide.

If you or somebody you know has this worry, then it should be brewing in your awareness to find the answers that produce autonomy from this evil web of anxiety.

Even though to the anxious it may appear impossible at first, the fright of spiders, like most fears, can most certainly be overcome.

There are a selection of treatments, exercises, and therapies that can help and the World Wide Web…oops…repentant…offers a limitless array of resources and textile that can be of assistance.

Most phobias are established to have developed from a traumatizing childhood experience that grew with the anxious so that it eventually becomes a part of him. At time when traumatizing childhood experiences cannot be established, psychologists were known to venture into the realm of reincarnation and bygone life regression.

Phobia is not the same as “fright”. A “panic” is a feeling of impending menace or evil established by inherent logics and reasoning or by gut instinct. A “terror” on the other hand is an overblown and disproportionate perception of certainty.

Some researchers theorized that spiders were once a menace to the creature nation anywhere in evolutionary story and that panic attacks ensuing from phobias were a security system that could avoid the life of persons. Such theories, however, have no pure foundations.

Is the panic of spiders rational? Almost each would permit that the answer to that issue is a resounding “no”. It is in verity, rather “spiritual”. An arachnophobe would be dreadfully scared of a spider that is genuinely nontoxic, and venomous spiders are not sincerely a risk if seen.

Experts harmonize that shrewd more about your terror helps you overcome it since most phobias grow out of horror of the strange. Following are some “fun” truth about spiders.

The fright of spiders actually has its roots pressing in Greek mythology. “Arachnophobia” comes from the Greek words, “arachne”, value “spider”, and “phobos”, sense “a terror”. Arachne was a lovely Greek maiden. She willful weaving under Athena, and had extraordinary flair. When her skills were later recognized, she denied any guidance given by Athena. Athena turned herself into a bitter, old female. She approached Arachne, and tricked her into a weaving contest. Arachne wove portraits of the gods performing evil deeds. Athena and Arachne ruined their weaving in an really terse total of time, but Arachne’s work was much finer than Athena’s. Athena was angry that a simple mortal had beaten her in a weaving contest and had portrayed the gods in a disrespectful way. Overcome with rage, she beat Arachne to the ground. Arachne was so grieve, she hanged herself. Athena realized what she had done, regretted her actions, and sprinkled a famous liquid onto Arachne, whirling her into a spider, so she could keep her weaving skills.

The feared tarantula isn’t toxic. A tarantula’s puncture can be awful, but it isn’t any more risky than a bee tingle.

Under a spider’s abdomen, near the rear, are tiny stubs called spinnerets. The spider uses its legs to injury liquid silk made in its abdomen from the spinnerets. The silk hardens as it stretches. Since silk is made out of protein, a spider eats the worn silk of an old web before whirling a new one.

On an American one-dollar statement, there is an owl in the high left-hand confront of the “1″ enclosed in the “armor” and a spider secret in the front greater right-hand turn.

Most spiders belong to the orb weaver spider family, Family Aranidae. This is pronounced “A Rainy Day.”

In the 1960s, animal behavior researchers studied the property of countless substances on spiders. When spiders were fed flies that had been injected with caffeine, they spun very “panicky” webs. When spiders ate flies injected with LSD, they spun webs with rowdy, abstract patterns. Spiders that were given sedatives destroy snoozing before completing their webs.

Horseshoe crabs and spiders are actually close relatives. The amulet crab belongs to the large group of invertebrates (animals lacking backbones) called Arthropods. This group also includes lobsters, crabs, insects, spiders, and scorpions. Even though it looks crab-like, with a hard bomb and claws, the mascot crab is more densely linked to scorpions and spiders than to crabs.

Many cultures believe that spiders fetch good accident. The spider was current with the Romans, who had a favorite mascot in the life of a precious rock winning which a spider was carved. Also they were fond of shipping little spiders of gold or silver, or any of the fortunate metals, to transport good fluke in anything to do with trade.

Spider silk can stretch up to 50 percent of its original segment. A leave of spider silk the width of a pencil could halt a Boeing 747 in flight.

On mean, people fear spiders more than they fear vanishing. However, statistically, you are more likely to be killed by a champagne plug than by the hurt of a noxious spider.

We’d maybe all be exhausted without spiders. Their sheer number makes spiders necessary in maintaining the settle of nature. Because they configure insect communities wherever they happen, spiders play a vital position in the terrestrial food bind. Without all those hungry spiders, insect populations would explode, food crops would be decimated, and ecological balances ravaged. Humans would perhaps starve within a stuff of months–if they hadn’t already succumbed to several insect-borne diseases. No spider, incidentally, has been found to transmit disease.

Spider spite can be worn to delight certain neurological and mental disorders. A inquiries group in Utah has secluded components from the rancor of many species of North American spiders, which may help moderate wits damage next strokes.
